How soon can hyperthyroidism be cured?
Disease description:
Recently, my uncle developed proptosis (bulging eyes) and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at the hospital. How soon can hyperthyroidism resolve?
How quickly hyperthyroidism can be resolved depends on the patient’s specific condition. In general, mild cases of hyperthyroidism are relatively straightforward to treat—typically with antithyroid medications alone. However, drug therapy is prolonged, usually requiring 1–2 years. Moreover, the risk of relapse is high. Surgical treatment of the thyroid offers a faster resolution: from the decision to proceed with surgery to completion of the operation and achievement of therapeutic effect for hyperthyroidism, the entire process typically takes less than one month. However, permanent hypothyroidism is also common following surgery.
