Do people with hyperthyroidism experience urinary urgency?
Disease description:
My aunt’s husband has recently been experiencing frequent urgency to urinate. He also has hyperthyroidism—can hyperthyroidism cause urinary urgency?
Urinary urgency in patients with hyperthyroidism is caused by excessive thyroid hormone. Additionally, patients may experience increased urinary frequency, hand tremors, exophthalmos (protruding eyes), and excessive sweating. In women, hyperthyroidism may also lead to prolonged menstrual cycles or amenorrhea. Polyuria can also occur in renal failure; diagnosis can be confirmed through tests such as renal color Doppler ultrasound and renal function assessment.
