Can orthokeratology (OK) lenses cause dry eye?
Disease description:
Slight pseudomyopia; purchased orthokeratology (OK) lenses. After wearing them for a period of time, I noticed some dryness in my eyes. Can OK lenses cause dry eye?
Orthokeratology (OK) lenses may cause dry eye. Prolonged and frequent wear can impede the cornea’s absorption of nutrients from the external environment, thereby contributing to dry eye syndrome. Reduced corneal nutrition leads to decreased tear production, resulting in ocular dryness and increased susceptibility to corneal inflammation. Therefore, patients should gently massage their eyes when wearing OK lenses. In severe cases, patients are advised to promptly seek evaluation and treatment at a reputable hospital to avoid disease progression.
