Is an L5-S1 intervertebral disc herniation serious?
Disease description:
My older brother feels pain in his lower back, and imaging revealed an L5–S1 intervertebral disc herniation. How serious is an L5–S1 disc herniation?
L5-S1 intervertebral disc herniation is generally not severe. It may cause low back pain but typically does not seriously compromise overall health. However, if left untreated, it may compress adjacent nerves, leading to symptoms such as lower limb pain, numbness in the lower limbs, and intermittent claudication. Patients experiencing these symptoms may, under a physician’s guidance, take vitamin B1 and celecoxib capsules. Additionally, manual therapy—including massage and manipulation—may be used as adjunctive treatment.
