Disease description:

I’ve been experiencing lower back pain lately and suspect it might be a lumbar disc herniation. Can imaging tests (e.g., X-rays, MRI, or CT scans) detect lumbar disc herniation?

Dr. Lin Yunfei
Imaging tests can detect lumbar disc herniation. Patients suspected of having lumbar disc herniation should consult the orthopedic department at a hospital for relevant examinations. Common diagnostic modalities include X-ray and CT scans, which help determine whether structural changes have occurred in the local vertebrae and whether surrounding nerves are being compressed. Once diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation, patients in the early stages may benefit from traction therapy to alleviate symptoms; in some cases, nucleotomy (removal of the herniated nucleus pulposus) may be performed.
