Disease description:

An 8-year-old child has purulent discharge from the ear and frequently complains of pain. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, the doctor diagnosed acute otitis media and recommended treatment with topical ear drops. I would like to ask: Which ear drops are appropriate for treating otitis media in children?

Commonly used ear drops for treating otitis media in children include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, and ofloxacin-based preparations, which are indicated for otitis media, otitis externa, suppurative otitis media, and tympanitis caused by susceptible bacteria. For acute non-suppurative otitis media, anti-inflammatory and analgesic ear drops—such as phenol glycerin solution—may be selected. If recurrent otitis media progresses to chronic otitis media, patients generally require hospital evaluation; diagnosis and treatment planning are based on otoscopic examination, audiometry, and computed tomography (CT) to determine the extent of disease.
