Is itchy corners of the eyes caused by excessive liver fire?
My outer canthus has been extremely itchy since yesterday. I read online that this might be due to excessive liver fire—could outer canthus itching indeed indicate excessive liver fire?
Itchy corners of the eyes may indicate excessive liver fire.
Excessive liver fire is a condition described in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM theory, the liver “opens into” the eyes; thus, when liver fire becomes excessive, symptoms such as redness and itching of the eyes may occur. Treatment should adopt a holistic approach, focusing on clearing liver heat, reducing fire, improving vision, nourishing yin, and tonifying the liver. For associated conditions such as jaundice or hepatitis, herbal remedies—including Gentiana scabra (Long Dan Cao), Chrysanthemum morifolium (Bai Ju Hua), and Artemisia capillaris (Yin Chen Hao)—may be used to effectively clear and subdue excess liver fire, thereby alleviating eye discomfort caused by this imbalance.
