Do oral mucous gland cysts resolve spontaneously?
Disease description:
A foreign body was found inside the mouth, prompting a medical examination that diagnosed a ranula (oral mucocele). Can a ranula resolve spontaneously?
Oral mucoceles do not resolve spontaneously. Surgical excision is the standard treatment for oral mucoceles, and complete removal typically results in cure. An oral mucocele consists primarily of a cyst wall and cystic fluid, usually presenting as a spherical lesion. It may cause pain and significant discomfort; therefore, early surgical intervention is recommended. Prior to surgery, thorough diagnostic evaluation is essential. Postoperatively, meticulous oral hygiene and wound care are required.
