Can gastroscopy detect esophageal cancer?
Disease description:
My cousin has a tumor in his esophagus, and it appears he may have esophageal cancer. Can gastroscopy detect esophageal cancer?
In most cases, gastroscopy can detect esophageal cancer. During gastroscopy, the endoscope is inserted through the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus into the stomach. Throughout this procedure, the physician can directly visualize the esophagus to identify any tumors or ulcerative lesions. Moreover, once esophageal cancer is confirmed, prompt surgical intervention is strongly recommended—especially in early-stage disease.
