Why Does Cortisol Increase?
Disease description:
I have developed a “moon face.” After undergoing medical examinations at the hospital, my cortisol levels were found to be elevated. Why is cortisol increased?
Elevated cortisol levels may result from hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction or pituitary adenomas, or may be caused by adrenal cortical disorders. Additionally, conditions such as ovarian cancer, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and pancreatic islet cell carcinoma can also lead to increased cortisol levels. When elevated cortisol is detected, further diagnostic testing is recommended to establish a definitive diagnosis.
