Is high cortisol caused by a pituitary tumor?
Disease description:
I’ve been feeling unwell recently, and during a routine physical examination at the hospital, I found that my cortisol levels are elevated. I’m somewhat concerned that this might indicate a pituitary tumor, so I’d like to ask: Does high cortisol necessarily mean I have a pituitary tumor?
Elevated cortisol levels are typically not caused by a pituitary tumor; however, a pituitary tumor can lead to elevated cortisol. Therefore, when a patient presents with hypercortisolism, it is recommended to promptly undergo medical evaluation—including adrenal and pituitary assessment, as well as CT and MRI imaging—while also considering the patient’s clinical symptoms to determine the precise underlying cause. Treatment should then be initiated under the guidance of a physician, using appropriate medications tailored to the diagnosis.
