Prior to initiating treatment, patients should undergo an ultrasound or color Doppler ultrasound examination at a hospital to precisely determine the location and size of the stone.
If the stone is relatively small—less than 0.5 cm in diameter—medical expulsive therapy may be appropriate, such as taking lithotriptic granules or Shenshitong (a traditional Chinese medicine formulation).
