What does the pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) assay measure?
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve been experiencing persistent pain in my chest area. My doctor ordered a pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (proBNP) test—what does this test measure?
B-type natriuretic peptide precursor (proBNP) testing is used for diagnosing heart failure, assessing disease severity, and monitoring treatment efficacy. A proBNP level above 400 pg/mL may indicate heart failure or other cardiac dysfunction. A level below 100 pg/mL is generally considered normal and suggests the absence of heart failure.
