How Should Pulmonary Embolism Be Treated, and What Precautions Should Be Taken?
Disease description:
My grandmother underwent orthopedic surgery yesterday and developed pulmonary embolism today. We would like to know the appropriate treatment approach and what precautions should be taken.
For pulmonary embolism, treatment with anticoagulant medications—such as argatroban and rivaroxaban—should be initiated once the patient is stable and under physician supervision. Thrombolytic agents—including recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) and urokinase—may also be used adjunctively. During treatment, patients should avoid vigorous coughing or constipation to prevent increased intra-abdominal pressure, which may impair venous return from the lower extremities.
