What Is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)?
Disease description:
A relative of mine was recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). I’m not very familiar with this condition—what exactly is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease primarily affecting the corticospinal tract. Both upper and lower motor neurons are damaged in patients, leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body—including the limbs and trunk. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this condition; however, supportive management strategies include dietary adjustments, ensuring adequate rest, and symptomatic treatment—for example, providing respiratory support in cases of dyspnea.
