What is the routine nursing care for high-level quadriplegia?
Disease description:
A family member of mine sustained high-level paraplegia due to a car accident, and I’m unsure how to care for them. Could you please explain the standard nursing care practices for high-level paraplegia?
Standard nursing care for high-level quadriplegia includes the following:
- During bed rest, reposition the patient every two hours and maintain personal hygiene to keep bed linens clean—this helps prevent pressure ulcers.
- Regularly massage the lower limbs and perform passive exercises (e.g., sitting up, leg lifts) to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
- If the patient produces sputum, assist them in expectorating it promptly.
- Provide a light yet nutritious diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables to prevent constipation.
