What does “frozen person” mean?
Disease description:
My relative was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) after experiencing weakness in all four limbs. I’m not very familiar with this condition—what exactly does “ALS” mean?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as “frozen person syndrome,” is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by damage to both upper and lower motor neurons, resulting in progressive muscle weakness and atrophy affecting the limbs, trunk, abdomen, and other regions. In early stages, patients may experience symptoms such as muscle weakness and easy fatigability. As the disease progresses, muscle atrophy worsens, leading to dysphagia and, in advanced cases, respiratory failure. Treatment focuses on neuroprotection and supportive care.
