The typical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are reflux and heartburn. Reflux refers to the backward flow of gastric contents into the pharynx after eating, while heartburn is characterized by a burning sensation behind the sternum extending upward toward the neck. In addition to reflux and heartburn, some patients may also experience upper abdominal pain and dyspepsia. As the disease progresses, reflux and heartburn may gradually diminish; however, patients may develop dysphagia—particularly with solid foods—manifesting as pain or an inability to swallow.
