Disease description:

I haven’t done anything strenuous, yet my body feels extremely sore—especially when lifting my arms, which causes significant pain in my arms. I suspect it’s dermatomyositis, but my mother thinks it’s polymyositis. I’d like to know: Are dermatomyositis and polymyositis the same condition?

They differ. Polymyositis primarily manifests as muscle weakness; patients may also experience muscle pain when raising their upper limbs. In addition to these muscular symptoms, dermatomyositis patients may develop characteristic skin rashes, such as purplish-red pruritic rashes or erythematous rashes. When going outdoors, strict sun protection is essential; clothing made of highly breathable fabrics should be selected whenever possible to prevent skin damage.
