Is gingival bleeding a sign of low platelet count?
Disease description:
My platelet count was previously found to be low; I frequently experience gum bleeding—could periodontal bleeding be due to thrombocytopenia?
Periodontal bleeding may indicate thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). Gingival bleeding occurs when the platelet count falls below the normal range. Thrombocytopenia impairs the body’s intrinsic coagulation function, leading to oral bleeding. In addition to gingival bleeding, even minor trauma or bruising elsewhere in the body may result in bleeding. Other causes of gingival bleeding include vitamin C deficiency and gingivitis.
