Can gingival bleeding lead to sepsis?
Disease description:
My gums have been bleeding frequently over the past few days. I’ve heard this can lead to sepsis—can gum bleeding actually cause sepsis?
It typically leads to sepsis. Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by bacterial invasion of the bloodstream. Gingival bleeding can result in infection; however, because the wound is very small, the risk of infection is low. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites are the primary pathogens responsible for sepsis, usually occurring secondary to immune dysfunction or immunosuppression.
