Is loose stool indicative of colitis?
Disease description:
Over the past few days, I’ve noticed my stools have been very loose when using the restroom. A friend suggested it might be colitis, so I’d like to know: does loose stool indicate colitis?
This is generally the case. The aforementioned conditions involve intestinal mucosal congestion and edema, and in severe cases, erosion or ulceration. Clinically, patients typically present with abdominal pain and diarrhea, accompanied by unformed stools. Symptoms often worsen after alcohol consumption or ingestion of spicy, irritating foods. If loose, unformed stools occur, a colonoscopy should be performed to confirm whether colitis is present. If the colonoscopy reveals no signs of colitis, functional gastrointestinal disorder is usually considered. With regular dietary habits, appropriate rest, and medication, recovery is typically rapid.
