What should be done for a patellar fracture accompanied by osteoporosis?
Disease description:
Recently, my uncle was involved in a car accident, resulting in a patellar fracture and triggering osteoporosis. He is experiencing severe pain, and we would like to know how to manage patellar fracture complicated by osteoporosis.
Medication should be combined with localized exercises. Calcium supplements—such as calcium carbonate with vitamin D3—may be administered, and oral vitamin D can be taken to enhance calcium absorption, thereby aiding recovery from post-fracture osteoporosis. Functional rehabilitation exercises are essential following fracture; prolonged immobilization may lead to disuse osteopenia or osteoporosis, necessitating early, active physical activity. For instance, range-of-motion exercises—including flexion and extension—should be performed for joints adjacent to the fracture site, especially the ankle joint. Early weight-bearing ambulation is effective both in restoring normal bone mineral density and in treating disuse osteopenia.
