What should be done if an elderly person with osteoporosis accidentally fractures their lower leg?
Disease description:
Osteoporosis commonly occurs in older adults. After my grandfather fell, he suffered a fracture in his lower leg. I would like to learn how to manage an accidental lower-leg fracture in elderly patients with osteoporosis.
Conservative treatment combined with topical plasters. For a Grade 1 compression fracture associated with lumbar osteoporosis, conservative management is appropriate. Elderly patients should rest supine on a firm mattress and wear a lumbar brace to stabilize the lumbar spine, thereby preventing further fracture progression and protecting surrounding nerves and blood vessels. Additionally, topical application of a blood-activating and softening ointment may be applied to the skin over the lumbar region. Regular supplementation with calcium and vitamin D is recommended. Dietary intake should include calcium-rich foods such as soybeans and lean meat.
