Disease description:

My aunt has osteophytosis (bone spurs). A relative suggested moxibustion with moxa sticks, claiming it can also dispel dampness. Is moxibustion appropriate for osteophytosis?

Dr. Lin Yunfei
If localized pain is caused by osteophyte formation (bone spur), moxibustion may be used to improve local blood circulation and facilitate the absorption of inflamed tissue. However, if the condition is due to yin deficiency with hyperactive fire or liver-kidney yin deficiency, moxibustion is contraindicated, as it may further exacerbate internal heat and harm the body. Patients with osteophyte formation should undergo orthopedic evaluation at a Grade II or higher hospital to determine the location and severity of the bone spurs.
