Is surgery appropriate for severe lumbar disc degeneration accompanied by osteoporosis?
Disease description:
I also have lumbar disc issues and severe osteoporosis, and I am considering surgical treatment. May I ask whether surgery is appropriate for patients with both lumbar disc disease and severe osteoporosis?
Surgery is also appropriate in this scenario. Severe osteoporosis is not an absolute contraindication to surgery; however, a comprehensive, systematic evaluation of the patient’s overall condition is essential. If severe osteoporosis is present, additional diagnostic assessments—particularly to determine the extent of disc herniation—are required. When standard, conservative treatment fails to alleviate symptoms—and especially if symptoms worsen—surgical intervention becomes necessary. Nevertheless, each surgical case must be individually analyzed, and multidisciplinary consultation may be required to formulate an optimal, tailored surgical plan.
