Why do I constantly tear up after cataract surgery?
Disease description:
Cataract surgery has been completed, but I occasionally experience tearing. I’m unsure why this is happening—what causes persistent tearing after cataract surgery?
Caused by inflammation, etc. Typically results in postoperative tearing, photophobia, and increased secretions. Failure of the patient to follow medical instructions regarding antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication use after surgery may lead to inflammatory reactions—or even infection. Corneal epithelial erosion can be managed with artificial tears and topical ophthalmic solutions to promote epithelial healing; alternatively, a corneal bandage contact lens may be used. Patients generally recover gradually within approximately 3–4 days.
