What does acute external otitis cause?
Disease description:
A colleague has developed acute otitis externa. What is the course of this condition, and what complications can acute otitis externa cause?
Acute otitis externa can cause itching, erythema, and other symptoms. Severe skin swelling in the patient may lead to narrowing or obstruction of the external auditory canal, tinnitus, and hearing loss. In severe cases, preauricular or postauricular lymphadenopathy and systemic malaise may occur. Under a physician’s guidance, anti-inflammatory otic drops may be appropriately used for treatment. If pain is present, oral analgesics may be administered.
