Can you wear orthokeratology lenses if you've had dry eye syndrome?
Disease description:
I previously had dry eye syndrome, but I’m now considering getting orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses. Is it possible to wear ortho-k lenses if I’ve had dry eye syndrome?
Individuals with a history of dry eye syndrome should avoid fitting orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses, as wearing them may exacerbate dry eye symptoms. For daily vision correction, eyeglasses are recommended. Additionally, applying a clean, warm, moist towel to the eyes for heat therapy can be beneficial. Sodium hyaluronate eye drops may also be used, as they help lubricate and protect the ocular surface. Since tear deficiency can lead to corneal epithelial friction and subsequent damage, ortho-k lenses should generally be avoided—even after successful treatment of dry eye syndrome.
