Urinary stream splitting may result from a stone obstructing the urethral meatus. If a relatively small stone becomes lodged in the anterior portion of the urethra during passage, it can cause urinary stream splitting. Chronic prostatitis and urethritis may also lead to this symptom, as inflammation causes urethral erythema and edema, resulting in dysuria. Additionally, urinary stream splitting can be physiological: in some healthy individuals, the distal urethra and the region adjacent to the urethral meatus on both sides are in close contact, which may also produce this phenomenon.
