Today I went to a Chinese herbal medicine shop and heard someone buying gypsum. I was very curious—how can you eat gypsum? So I'd like to ask, is it safe to consume gypsum?

Gypsum can be consumed, but it must be decocted first and then boiled together with other herbs to achieve the effects of clearing the lungs and reducing fever. It cannot be eaten directly and is only used in decoctions. Gypsum contains calcium carbonate, which can help supplement calcium; however, excessive consumption may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating and abdominal pain. For calcium supplementation, bone broth or milk are better alternatives.
