Individuals with iron deficiency anemia may develop a dull or sallow complexion. Iron deficiency anemia typically does not involve yellowing of the sclera; however, facial jaundice accompanied by elevated bilirubin levels can cause yellow discoloration of both the face and the sclera. The complexion of individuals with iron deficiency anemia can be improved through blood transfusions or iron supplementation. Once the condition is fully resolved, any facial pigmentation or yellowish spots will also disappear. Treatment for iron deficiency anemia primarily involves two aspects: one is iron supplementation, and the other is eliminating the underlying causes of iron deficiency.
