Can you run with a lumbar disc bulge?
Disease description:
Dad likes running in the morning, but recently he has been diagnosed with a mild disc bulge in his lumbar spine. Can he still run with a lumbar disc bulge?
Patients can run, but must pay attention to their running technique. Exercise should not be intense, in order to avoid increasing forces on the lumbar spine that could worsen disc bulging. If there are clear symptoms of nerve compression, these typically improve significantly or resolve completely within one to two months through rest and activity restriction. When running, wear soft, elevated-cushion shoes to reduce pressure on the intervertebral discs and provide protective benefits.
