The common cause of pulmonary embolism in elderly individuals is pulmonary thromboembolism, which results from deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis refers to the formation of blood clots in the deep veins, and contributing factors include prolonged bed rest, advanced age, smoking, and central venous catheterization. If the pulmonary embolism is not particularly severe, obvious symptoms may not appear. However, if the pulmonary embolism is more serious, symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood may occur.
