Disease description:

I've had a wisdom tooth for about a week, and recently noticed a fleshy lump growing next to it. What could cause a fleshy lump to develop beside a wisdom tooth?

A fleshy lump has grown next to the wisdom tooth, possibly caused by gingival hyperplasia or abscess. The area adjacent to the wisdom tooth often has gum tissue, which is prone to pericoronitis. If this occurs repeatedly, it may stimulate gingival hyperplasia, forming a fleshy mass. Pericoronitis typically presents as obvious redness and swelling of the gums. When the body's resistance is strong, the inflammation may become localized and form an abscess. The abscess feels soft and is painful upon touch. When wisdom teeth grow abnormally, it is generally recommended to avoid the acute inflammatory phase and proceed with extraction of the wisdom tooth to prevent recurrent inflammation.
