Hearing may improve after cleft palate surgery. Although hearing can show some improvement following the surgery, it only becomes slightly better than before the repair. Cleft palate results from an oral defect, which can lead to compensatory articulation and other resonance disorders due to poor speech production. Poor hearing might be caused by issues with the auditory nerve or congenital developmental factors; currently, there is no particularly effective treatment available, but neurotrophic medications may be tried for observation. If relevant middle ear function tests confirm such abnormalities, tympanostomy tube placement surgery should be considered.
