When scratched by a cat, the wound should first be cleaned. Place the injured area under running tap water and rinse thoroughly. During rinsing, clean the wound with soap water, hydrogen peroxide, or normal saline to remove debris. After cleaning, apply iodine tincture to disinfect the wound. Once disinfected, an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory ointment may be applied appropriately. If the wound is deep or large, seek medical attention promptly for a rabies vaccine injection.
