What Are the Uses of Expired Yogurt?
Disease description:
Female, 28 years old. I have an excessive amount of yogurt at home—often it goes uneaten and expires before I can finish it, and I’m hesitant to consume it for fear of food poisoning. Could you please advise on alternative uses for expired yogurt?
Although expired yogurt is not recommended for direct consumption, it still has multiple alternative uses. First, it can serve as a natural plant fertilizer, providing nutrients to flowers and plants. Second, due to its lactic acid content, expired yogurt can be used for cleaning and stain removal—such as kitchen grease or surface stains on furniture. Additionally, it can be applied as a hair treatment: massage it gently into the hair, leave it briefly, then rinse thoroughly to enhance smoothness and manageability.
Before using expired yogurt for any of these purposes, ensure it shows no signs of spoilage—such as mold, unusual discoloration, or off-putting odor. When used as fertilizer, dilute or mix it thoroughly with soil before application. For stain removal, apply directly to the affected area and wipe clean. For hair care, perform a patch test first to rule out allergic reactions, and rinse thoroughly afterward.
To minimize food waste, we recommend regularly checking expiration dates and planning food usage and storage accordingly.
