Disease description:

After getting married to my husband, I gave birth to a son. Now neither my husband nor I want any more children, so last month I underwent sterilization surgery. May I ask, will a woman still have menstrual periods after being sterilized?

Women who have undergone tubal ligation usually still have menstrual periods. Female sterilization, or tubal ligation, involves cutting or clamping a portion of the fallopian tube—specifically the isthmus, where sperm and egg normally meet and fertilization occurs. By disrupting the continuity of the fallopian tubes, fertilization is prevented, thus achieving infertility. Menstruation, however, results from the shedding of the uterine lining and is unrelated to the fallopian tubes. After sterilization, the uterus and ovaries continue to function normally; therefore, menstruation continues as usual following the procedure.
