What tests are needed for pelvic inflammatory disease and adnexitis?
Disease description:
When suspecting pelvic inflammatory disease or adnexitis, what medical tests should be done at the hospital to determine which condition you have?
To determine whether a patient has pelvic inflammatory disease, the physician will perform a pelvic examination to identify the location of inflammation and the infectious pathogens. Blood tests, as well as bacterial cultures of blood or urine samples, are also required to identify the specific causative organisms. Additionally, imaging examinations such as laparoscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) scans are needed to confirm the presence and nature of any lesions and to rule out other possible diseases. To diagnose adnexitis, a gynecological examination is necessary, along with testing of vaginal secretions, pathogen identification, and imaging studies such as CT scans and transvaginal ultrasound to confirm the condition.
