What causes elevated levels of carbohydrate antigen 199?
After going to the hospital for a physical examination, my test results showed elevated levels of carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199). What could cause an elevated CA199 level?
Elevated carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA 199) can be caused by many factors.
On one hand, malignant tumors of the digestive system—such as pancreatic cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer—often lead to elevated CA 199 levels.
On the other hand, certain benign conditions may also cause elevation, such as acute or chronic pancreatitis, cholecystitis, and hepatitis. In addition, non-neoplastic diseases like diabetes and renal insufficiency may lead to a moderate increase in CA 199 under certain circumstances.
