During preoperative skin preparation for appendectomy, a disposable razor should be used to remove pubic hair from the perineal area. If there is also excessive hair on the lower abdomen or upper thighs, hair in these areas should be completely removed as well. After shaving, alcohol should be applied to the shaved areas to help reduce the risk of surgical site infection.
