What does it mean when transaminase levels are elevated?
Disease description:
Two days ago, I went to the hospital for a routine physical examination. I wasn’t experiencing any discomfort, but the test results showed elevated transaminase levels. Could you please explain what this means?
Hello, there are many possible causes for elevated gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). One possibility is an increased demand for glutamine in the body, which may stimulate higher production of this enzyme. Another common cause is liver injury: under normal conditions, GGT is primarily located within hepatocytes; however, when hepatocytes are damaged or rupture, GGT is released into the bloodstream.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health!
