What does it mean when the gallbladder is enlarged?
Disease description:
During my physical examination the other day, the results showed an enlarged gallbladder. What does an enlarged gallbladder mean?
Gallbladder enlargement may result from gallstones or inflammation causing chronic cholecystitis, or from obstruction of the cystic duct leading to gallbladder distension. When bile cannot enter the intestine, it accumulates within the gallbladder, causing this enlargement. Additionally, if there are stones or tumors in the distal bile duct causing blockage, or malignant tumors in the distal biliary tract, these conditions commonly lead to gallbladder enlargement as well.
