Excessively high jaundice in newborns may affect brain tissue. When jaundice is too severe, bilirubin can cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain tissue, causing necrosis of nerve cells and even damaging the central nervous system, leading to encephalopathy. It is recommended that patients receive timely treatment once jaundice appears, to prevent its further progression.
