Disease description:

After my best friend's recent menstrual periods, she has been experiencing breast tenderness. After a hospital examination, she learned it was caused by a breast fibroadenoma. What are the differences between breast cysts and breast fibroadenomas?

Dr. Peng Xiaodong
The difference between breast cysts and fibroadenomas is that during the course of breast cysts, oval or round fluid-filled sacs with well-defined surfaces may appear in the breast, and a minority of patients may have symptoms of nipple discharge. Fibroadenoma is a condition caused by an abnormally heightened sensitivity of breast fibrous cells to estrogen. When it occurs, lumps may develop in the breast, and some patients may also experience pain.
