There are various causes of kidney atrophy, which may result from congenital underdevelopment of the kidneys. It can also be caused by chronic conditions such as pyelonephritis, secondary kidney diseases, or renal artery stenosis, leading to a reduction in the size or number of normal kidney cells and tissues. This results in decreased kidney volume and may be accompanied by impaired kidney function.
