Congenital funnel chest may be caused by congenital factors, usually due to an imbalance between cartilage growth-promoting genes and growth-inhibiting genes during the embryonic period, leading to abnormal remodeling of anterior chest cartilage. It may also result from acquired factors, such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia or bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
