What does it mean to have a large amount of fluid in the pleural cavity?
Disease description:
This afternoon, while at work, I suddenly felt severe chest pain. After my colleagues sent me to the hospital, the doctor said there was a large amount of fluid accumulation in my chest cavity. I would like to know what might be causing this.
A large amount of fluid in the pleural cavity may result from lung inflammation, which irritates the pleura and causes excessive fluid to exude and accumulate in the chest. It could also be due to chest trauma causing rupture of blood vessels in the lung, leading to blood leakage and fluid accumulation. Additionally, if there is a primary or metastatic tumor in the lung, the tumor may compress blood vessels, resulting in fluid leakage and the formation of substantial pleural effusion.
