Congenital cleft lip and palate may be determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. If a close relative of the patient has cleft lip or palate, the likelihood of the condition occurring in the next generation is usually higher. Additionally, if a woman has poor health during pregnancy, takes certain medications, or is exposed to viruses or chemical substances for prolonged periods, it may also lead to congenital cleft lip and palate in the newborn.
